The Return of The Bodysuit!

Sadly I remember the original bodysuits as a teenager.  I would wear my high waisted DKNY jeans with a black or white long sleeved turtle neck topped off with a mass of curly ‘cork screwed’ hair.  That was the pinnacle of early nineties fashion.

bodysuit4bodysuit7   bodysuit9

Bodysuits in the 90’s were like a toddlers ‘onesie’, like a leotard or one piece swimwear with awkward, practically impossible to reach, snap fasteners under the crotch.  The press studs were annoying and also uncomfortable and if the body suit didn’t fit correctly it was forever giving a wedgy, revealing ‘hip skin’ or ‘popping’ undone.

Sometimes all three happened!  The horror!

Attempt to sit down……………Reveal hip skin, feel the wedgy…………….‘pop’!!!!

Even worse, however, was that I was forever forgetting to snap the fasteners back into back place after a visit to the powder room.

‘Tail’ watching was a regular event in the early 90’s.  And, it wasn’t a good look!

By the mid 1990’s the belly button piercing craze had hit town and everyone decided to reveal their jewelled navels and abandon these poor misunderstood body suits to the back of the wardrobe.

bodysuits12

And so to 2014, thankfully bodysuits have moved on from those early creations and today they are an excellent wardrobe staple.  The closures are not directly under the crotch and advanced fabrications and tailored cuts mean that the body suit can offer smooth lines, support and, in some cases that extra bum lift.

Here’s Leighton Meester rocking a lace body with bra underneath and some other examples of modern day bodies.

Look out for some new body suits being offered by The Hosiery Queen in 2014.

I can guarantee that the fit will be right but you’ll still have to remember to fasten them!

The ‘tail’ will never be fashionable!

The ‘Saucy’ Fishnet

fishnetsmaid

No one is exactly sure where the ‘saucy’ fishnet originated from; What is known is that in 1908 fishnet stockings arrived in America from Paris.

Most fishnets, in general, are diamond in shape with various sized mesh holes.

The smallest is called a micro net or micro tulle.

fisdhnet fishneytgg fishnet fishnetsaaa

The next size up is the 2mm regular diamond fishnet that we have probably all seen, heard of and probably worn for a naughty night in!

fishneteee fishnets10 fishnets3

After this is the not so widespread industrial net which is about 12mm in size.

And, finally, at the end of the scale, are the larger fishnets which can also be called stringer, fence or whale nets.

From the early 1900’s and right up until the 1960’s fishnets were only worn by ‘ladies of the night’, tarty women, dancers and pin up girls.  At some point during the 1960’s the fishnet, which was still a stocking held up with a garter belt,  became ‘marginally fashionable’, but it definitely wasn’t at all mainstream or worn by enough women to turn around it’s ‘tarty’ image.

During the 1970’s the Punks claimed the fishnet as their own by making the net a mockery of modern cultures view of the females sexuality;  this was mentioned in Lauraine Leblanc’s book ‘Pretty in Punk’, females were,

taking what they and their society thinks is sexy and … making it ugly’.

After the punks the Goths adorned themselves with the fishnet which then popularized the net with many ‘alternative’ teenagers around the world and continues to do so even to this day.

It was not until much later, probably around the early 1990’s, that fishnet tights started to be seen on the catwalks and in main stream fashion.  Indeed it was really only at the start of this century that ‘good girls’ (whatever that is!?) could wear fishnets to the office and not be called a ‘tart’ or asked if they were dressing for Halloween.

Even now, with the fishnets racy past, it is still as important as ever to choose your fishnet and outfit carefully.  Personally I’m a fan of nude colour micro-nets, they are far more durable than regular denier hosiery, sexy up close and totally professional if someone is more than a foot away.

Yes, look closely, Katy Perry has them on here.

What to Wear With Red Tights

redggg

I don’t usually wear red tights as I prefer to leave looking like a clown, Santa’s little helper or a super hero to young children.

Red tights in ‘Cherry red’, ‘Fire-Engine Red’ and ‘Stop-Light red’ can be a somewhat intimidating colour but, when worn correctly, they can make a real bold pizazz statement.

So how about making red tights the star of the show by teaming them with jet black, navy blue, beige, polka dots, cool crisp whites or even a ditzy flora?

Let’s start with a little black dress.  Add some sexy red stockings teamed with high heel black stilettos or high heel boots and a simple black trench.

red2 imagesCAF80O72imagesCAB999V9 imagesCAFZNTC7

How about black ankle boots worn with a grey dress (or grey skirt with matching cable sweater), black leather bag and red hot tights.  The red can also be accented with matching jewellery or a scarf with red highlights.

How about a sophisticated look?  Red tights with navy blue high waisted shorts teamed with a crisp white shirt; tying the look together with a coordinating red belt.  You could also try a more casual look teaming red tights with denim shorts/denim skirt a simple tee or hoodie and tough looking black boots, casual converse or ballerina flats.

And, finally, how can anyone forget the 2007 Gossip Girl look?  Rocking the red tights with a navy outfit with white detailing, pinstripe blazer, navy flats and head band with red accents?

So there you go.  Red is not just for lips and nails.  There are some other great ways to wear our scarlet friend!

Understanding Hosiery Deniers. A Simple Guide.

I am ashamed to admit that deniers have always confused me, which, seeing as I have worked in textiles all my life is a bit embarrassing to fess up to.

It all just seems so confusing….

w2-pantyhose-083112

Technically, the denier concept was initially applied to natural fibres, such as silk and cotton, but over time this has included synthetic fibres, such as rayon and nylon. A denier is a measurement that is used to identify the fibre thickness of individual threads or filaments used in the creation of cloth. One denier means that 9,000m of yarn weighs one gram. This means that denier relates to the weight (i.e. thickness) of the yarn.

Here’s a picture of a denier balance that is used in textile labs around the world:

denier

Got it?

No….me neither!

In simple terms, the lower the denier, the sheerer and more fragile the hosiery is. The higher the denier the more opaque (less see through) and thicker the hosiery becomes. As with most things, however, there are exceptions. To bewilder the hosiery buyer even more there are now certain ‘up market’ hosiery brands that appear sheerer than their denier, so they offer sheerness and strength!

confused

Anyway, here’s The Hosiery Queens basics to deniers:

  • Ultra-Sheers are usually less than 10 denier and will smooth out blemishes for the ultimate bare leg look. Ultra-Sheers are ideal in hot weather and for glamorous evening translucency. You can also wear Ultra-Sheers with strappy sandals as most have sheer toes. Ultra-Sheers are also terribly fragile and easily snagged, so keep the clear nail polish handy!

imagesCATGRNI4

ultrasheers

  • Sheers are the mainstream classic hosiery at 10 to 20 denier.  Sheers are slightly thicker than the Ultra-Sheer. With Sheers it will be obvious you are wearing hosiery and they are ideal for everyday wear. Sheers are a little more durable than its more fragile sister and are also less likely to snag.

tumblr_mrzsbm9Nvv1sztnw4o1_500 imagesCAA5RPVZ imagesCAEJ436Q

  • Semi-Opaques are stronger than Sheers at around 21 to 40 denier. Semi-Opaques are not yet Opaque but they are more durable than Sheers.  You can also still see the skin through the texture.

semi opaques imagesCAICS4RU imagesCAAOFKJ8 imagesCAQYB4IA

  • Opaques are from 40 denier up and can also be referred to as ‘tights’ because of their solid structure and full coverage. Opaques are great for the  start of winter and colour blocking.

imagesCA452WV3  imagesCAOWU6LR imagesCAY3S5W3opaqueimagesCA0MW0LW

  • Thick Opaques will be around 70 to 99 denier. These are the heavier, longer lasting members of the hosiery family and are also ideal for winter.

imagesCAI7LZJR imagesCASIAXAE imagesCAV73UU7 imagesCAIR3UTY

Finally, the big daddy of hosiery is the:

  • Mega Thick Opaque at 100 Denier Plus.  These are great alternatives to leggings and woolly tights and are absolutely perfect for bitterly cold winters.

imagesCAJM2PRN  yyyy imagesCARZTA2E

I hope this little insight into the hosiery family helps. As you can see understanding the different deniers, and the names associated with them, is invaluable.  Differing weights and thicknesses will affect style, comfort, warmth, and appearance.

I think I need to buy a gorgeous little black dress to match back to these exquisite embellished tights.
