Etymology

The word ‘stocking’ is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘stoku’ meaning ‘sleeve’, related to the word ‘stocc’ meaning trunk or log.  The earliest known usage of the work ‘stocking’ in English dates back to the 16th century.
