I could seriously watch this scene from the Devil Wears Prada over and over again. There is something really quite special with this ‘whisper yell’ monologue from Meryl Streep on the colour ‘Cerulean’;
‘……….that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff”.’
It’s a pretty powerful scene and totally sums up the fashion industry. It’s exactly what I want to say to people whenever they try and tell me that fashion isn’t important and that it’s a ‘silly’ or ‘shallow’ profession.
For anyone that doesn’t know what colour ‘Cerulean’ is here’s the nitty gritty;
‘Cerulean, also spelled caerulean, is a color term that may be applied to certain colors with the hue ranging roughly between blue and cyan, overlapping with both. It also largely overlaps with azure and sky blue, although cerulean is dimmer’.
Much clearer now, isn’t it?
