Marlene Dietrich is one of my favourite Hollywood golden age actresses. Did you know that when she starred in the 1930’s film ‘The Blue Angel’, as cabaret singer Lola-Lola, wearing just a corset and black stockings, a ‘Motion Picture Production Code’ was introduced in the USA?
This code was in response to the ‘perceived risk of moral degradation’ and expressly forbade nakedness, suggestive dancing, passionate scenes and the banning of stockings in film.
Take a look at the stocking-clad Dietrich singing ‘Falling in Love Again’.
Can you imagine how shocking this would have been in the 1930’s?
Now I have the song stuck in my head….
