Striped and patterned hosiery first gained popularity in the 1870’s, before this time stockings were generally in black for daytime wear and white or coloured for the evening.  One of the first references for striped and patterned hosiery can be seen in John Tenniel’s illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Through The Looking Glass in 1871, depicting young Alice in her striped stockings.
